Edward Berger’s Conclave Dominates Awards Season with 12 BAFTA Nominations
16 January 2025
Edward Berger is back in the awards season spotlight, and this time, Conclave is leading the charge with 12 BAFTA nominations, the most of any film this year.
Based on Robert Harris’s novel, Conclave is a tense, deeply layered exploration of power, faith, and human frailty. Set within the claustrophobic walls of the Vatican during a papal election, the film draws viewers into a labyrinth of secrecy and ambition. With its compelling narrative and standout performances, Conclave is shaping up to be the cinematic achievement of the year.
“A superbly crafted — in every respect — stunning dramatic achievement.” - Deadline
Berger shared insights into crafting the character of Cardinal Lawrence, played by Ralph Fiennes, whose internal struggles form the emotional core of the film. “Ralph’s character is basically based in doubt. He says at some point, ‘I have difficulty with prayer.’ Just imagine. That’s like me saying I have difficulty believing in the power of the camera I’m using,”
This isn’t the first time Berger has dominated the BAFTAs. Last year, his World War I epic All Quiet on the Western Front tied the record for the most nominations ever received by a non-English language film, with 14 nods.
Among its 12 nominations, Conclave is vying for Best Film, Best Director for Berger, Best Leading Actor for Ralph Fiennes, Outstanding British Film, and Best Adapted Screenplay for Peter Straughan.
As awards season unfolds, Conclave is undeniably the film to watch—and Edward Berger remains the storyteller to follow.
